March 7th is «World Field Day.» This celebration originated in Argentina and gradually spread throughout the world.
On this day, we at Cestari Metallurgical Industries want to recognize the countryside by learning about some of the thousands of stories that are built in our Argentine countryside.
Roberto, Marcelo, and Lisandro are from Mariano H. Alfonzo, Buenos Aires province, and of course, have been Cestari users for many years. This is the third generation of the Churin family, who continue to work in various agricultural tasks.
Lisandro tells us what a field day is like for this family: «They’re not all the same due to the dates the field manages. Some days we thresh, other days we fumigate, other days we pack, but generally we start with my dad picking up the kids we work with to go to the field, which is about five kilometers from Alfonzo. Once there, we start with some mate, dividing the tasks, and that’s how we get started.»
Not every day is the same in the Argentine countryside, and the diversity of tasks is what makes it attractive. The Churin family has lived, worked, and breathed the countryside for many years, and Lisandro is now in the third generation.
What does this mean? “It’s something beautiful and a bit crazy, too. Every day, you meet people who know you or know your whole story, and you don’t even know who they are,” he adds about his own story: “It starts with my maternal grandfather, Roberto Pepa, who worked in the fields his entire life, along with his siblings after their parents came from Italy. He had two daughters and a son, one of them my mother, Karina, who married my father, Marcelo. He was a rural laborer as a child until he and some friends were able to buy their first sprayer, and then they started a partnership. Then he was able to go it alone, and that’s where I come from, and I always knew I would continue with this. I’m trying to learn and do the job to the best of my ability,” Lisandro says.

Regarding their future challenges, the Churin family’s motto is clear: «Keep growing. Today we have two sprayers, two fertilizer equipment, and one harvesting unit. As a child, I used to say I wanted to have several harvesting units. Now that we’re a little bigger, seeing how things are a little bit more complicated, it’s not impossible. I hope we can add more units.»
For many people in our country, the countryside is life. What does the countryside mean to a family of workers like the Churins? Lisandro answers: «The countryside is what makes you feel good. Where we like to be.» And without a doubt, this is the best way to celebrate this day.
